I tried 'Random' setup button on Stratego. Very amusing, but not very useful. I petition
spion (webmaster and interface programmer, I suppose), to enhance 'Random' setup
button to make more useful. Here is my suggestion: add user selectable options, like for
the Stratego game options (e.g. 'Ranking' checkbox). None checked, random is like now.
Check boxes:
* place flag in back row
* surround flag with bombs (even not in back row!)
* place marsh and gen in front two rows
** don't place marsh or gen in entry spaces
* place spy behind lake (but not in back rank) on side of board with gen
* place 4-6 bombs in bottom two rows
* fill up back row with miners (after bombs and flag)
* place sergeant or lieutenant behind or beside every bomb
* don't place colonels or majors in entry spaces
* don't place bombs in entry spaces
Maybe enough, but almost all easy to implement, few lines of code each. Then, all remaining pieces random. I think most desirable setups follow these rules, plus
some others. Some needed rules are complicated, like: either marsh or gen should
be within 5 steps of flag (i.e. can capture' flag in 5 moves or less). If somewhat
random setup follows all the rules, I think I can swap a few pieces, and make good setup. Completely random setup, as now, is more work to fix than make my own. Regards, Sir_Richard |
