especially for UL. I don't understand how I could only gain two points for beating riskytom at UL. Is there a rating calculator available to calculate points on wins?? I'm finding this confusing. Please explain

There is no rating calculator. The rating system is a cobweb of interconnected ratings. Your rating is strongly connected to ratings of players you have played often. And it is indirectly and therefore weakly connected to ratings of players you have not played.
So when the ratings of players, you are strongly connected to, changes, your rating can change as well, even if you are not playing.
The more games you play the more reliable is your rating. It is then fixed by more connecting threads to other ratings. It fluctuates less after each single game. riskytom has played less games. His rating should have decreased more than just two points.
That's probably why so many players with less than ten games are at the top of the list. Many of them (excluding Lion, I guess) are there not due to their playing strength but rather because they had some lucky games.
For this reason you need at least 20 rated games to get ranked.
The purpose of this rating is not to reward players for winning a game, but find an estimate for playing strength as precise and impartial as possible. One disadvantage of this is that you need to keep in mind the unreliability of ratings based on only few games. Another problem occurs when the true (and unknown) playing strengths change over time. This problem is mitigated by assigning less weight to older games.

Ty 'ritter for the explanation. It's a different style of rating but seems to be effective in judging player strengths. |
